The History of Beds

With us spending on average a third of our lives asleep, this just shows the sheer importance of the role our beds play in our lives. Beds are also something we take entirely for granted and with places like Beds Direct 247 offering such a fantastic range of beds for our homes, from wooden beds to leather beds, we are not only spoiled with comfort but with choice and décor when it comes to our beds. However, it may surprise you to know just how beds have developed over time…

Cast your mind back 5000 years ago to the time of Ancient Egyptians and you will find the first noted historical record of the wooden bed, but not as we know it today. An Egyptian's wooden bed consisted of the wooden frame which then had leather stretched across the middle to create the bottom of the bed. Many people would actually sleep on this leather alone unless they were fortunate enough to have enough animal hair/plants within a linen sack to create a pillow and mattress.

Further down the line the Romans created a feature of the bed allowing it to be used for multiple purposes as both a couch and a bed, as the bed was often contained within the living quarters. The feather pillows and mattresses were again a luxury for those who could afford these.

The Medieval times then brought the bed more or less to the piece of furniture it is today as the spring mattress became invented during 1865. Foam mattresses were a later feature with their introduction being 60 years ago in the 1950's.

Beds have played an important feature in everyone's day to day lives for centuries and the sheer importance of a good bed can be seen. A good night's sleep is vital for ones wellbeing, which is why Beds Direct provide only the best wooden beds and so on.
